Luxury Crossovers that sit just below entry-luxury models like the BMW X3 and Lexus RX, are still just babies in this segment. However, Buick has arrived with their own. Front-wheel drive, a small turbo four-cylinder and an automatic transmission are standard. All-wheel drive is optional.

Exterior

The Encore is compact, nearly 3 feet shorter and 9.1 inches narrower than the Enclave. The overall shape looks like GM’s Saturn Vue, with the classic Buick grille and gorgeous blue tinged HID headlights. This beautiful compact crossover sits on boastful 18 inch aluminum wheels.

Interior

The cabin’s coloured with nice earth tones and active noise cancellation in the Encore is a Buick first. Buick’s IntelliLink multimedia system is standard; it can stream smartphone applications through a 7-inch dash display. Like the Verano sedan, the Encore comes with standard leatherette-and-cloth or optional full-leather seats. Other options include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system and a backup camera.

Behind the rear seats is 18.5 cubic feet of cargo room. Fold the seats down and the Encore has 48.4 cubic feet, which is closer to hatchback than SUV territory, but similar to the space in the X1 and Q3, Buick says. The Encore’s fold-flat front passenger seat allows for longer, narrow cargo to fit.

Under the Hood

GM’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder is the sole engine. With 140 horsepower and 148 pounds-feet of torque, the tiny four-cylinder works through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional.

Safety

Ten airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard. Forward collision and lane departure warning systems are optional.

New for 2013, and introduced at the New York Auto Show, Buick has released a refreshed version of the Buick Enclave.

The 2013 Enclave’s interior cabin gets a total facelift which includes a variety of trims and spectacular lighting that gives a very modern stylish look.

A backlit ridge arcs all the way over the instrument panel, wrapping smoothly around from front door to front door. Now equipped with Buick Intellilink, drivers will get a new feel to the centre console.  Look for the beautiful stitching throughout the cabin, sported with a mahogany steering wheel.

The exterior is not exactly the same as on previous models. Buick has given the front and rear end a new design. The waterfall grille is slightly different. Headlamps now include standard xenon HID beams, while running lamps and tail lamps have gone LED. The chrome throughout the exterior has been put together very nicely.

As for the Enclaves powertrain, nothing has changed. This is fine with us because the 3.6-litre V6 with 288 horsepower and 270 pound feet of torque is a fantastic engine for this beautiful crossover. An updated six-speed automatic transmission, with new calibration, could prove a key upgrade.

New low-velocity control shocks in back will make for an improved already smooth ride.

The Interior layout of the Enclave will remain the same, giving you up to eight seats. The best part is you can fold down the seats with one hand and you are presented with a perfectly flat surface. Great for your visits to the big box stores.

A new front centre airbag provides more safety to protect the front occupants from colliding in the case of an accident. Also, blind zone alert system will be sported in the Enclave. This system alerts you when there is a vehicle in your blind spot while you are changing lanes. Amazing!

IntelliLink is the big news for some shoppers, as it brings the Enclave’s interior up to the leading edge in connectivity, with an intuitive and easy to use interface, well-integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming functionality, and apps for Pandora and Stitcher audio. A rearview camera system, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, and voice recognition are also part of the standard kit, while navigation is optional, as is a ten-speaker Bose sound upgrade.

It’s a sad time for drivers, and it’s more maddening than usual this year.

As daily commuters, how can we get from A to B without breaking the bank? There are a few ways to ensure you are running your engine at the optimum fuel saving maximum.

• Make sure your filters are clean! Having dirty filters bogs down the air to fuel mixture. In turn, you burn more gas.
  

• Have your wheels aligned. Uneven wear indicates improper wheel alignment. When your tires are not aligned the vehicle has to work harder to be efficient and roll smoothly. This causes a spike in gas usage.

• Flush your Coolant. Clean coolant = happy engine. You don’t want to clog hoses and cause corrosion to the rad. If the coolant is clean the engine is happy and will drive at full efficiency allowing for more km’s to the full tank!

• Top up your nitro. If you have bought a car recently you know your tires are full of nitrogen. If they are low it will cause pressure variance. Pressure variance means a shaky ride and less fuel efficient. Get in to the dealer and top er’ up!
